Robert D. Zuehlsdorf, ARMY
Robert D. Zuehlsdorf (Bob) enlisted in the U.S. Army and was inducted in April 1968. He spent Basic Infantry Training at Ft. Lewis, Washington and then Advanced Infantry Training (AIT) at Ft. Dix, New Jersey. While he was in AIT, he was notified that his brother, Marine 1st LT. John W. Zuehlsdorf (Bill) was killed in Vietnam in a helicopter crash. After returning from emergency leave, Bob was sent to Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. He graduated from OCS in February 1969 as a 2nd LT. Military Intelligence Officer.
Bob’s next assignment was for 8 months at the Vietnamese Language School in Ft. Bliss, Texas. Upon completion, he was sent to Ft. Holabird, Maryland for military intelligence training and graduated in December 1969.
Bob traveled to South Vietnam in January 1970 and served in the 571st Military Attachment Unit in ICorps, Da Nang, South Vietnam. His immediate supervisor was Maj. Kassenbaum. They worked directly with a South Vietnamese Army Intelligence unit as military intelligence analyst. Our interpreter was Army Republic of Vietnam Sgt Hue, a close friend.
Bob was also the Detachment’s paymaster and traveled throughout ICorps to pay the Detachment’s soldiers in the field.
While in South Vietnam, Bob was promoted to 1st LT. and received the Army Commendation Medal, the Bronze Star Award, and the South Vietnam Army “ Staff Service medal”.
Bob returned to the United States in December 1970 and was honorably discharged in January 1971 at Ft. Riley, Kansas.
