Frank Rayer volunteered for the draft a year after attending Central High School in Omaha Nebraska. He served for seven and a half months in the Central Highlands of Vietnam with the 4th Engineer Battalion, 4th Infantry Division. His duties included going on mine sweeps and being a demolition expert. He voluteered to be a part of a special platoon for rappelling from a moving helicopter to carry out rescue operations. He was awarded a bronze star for one of these harrowing missions where the wounded from three infantry companies under siege needed to be evacuated from the Chu Pa Mountain.
