Edgar Kneiss, ARMY
Edgar was born in Taylor, Pennsylvania to parents Mary & John Kneiss. His post high school plans had fallen through, and he was still looking for his purpose at age 20. He and his good friend, Tommy Landman, agreed to join the Army on the Buddy Program. Before signing, Edgar decided to give basketball in college one more try and did a semester at Anderson University. Tommy went on to do one full tour in Vietnam, but died shortly into his 2nd when he was killed by a direct hit to the tank he was riding in. Edgar enlisted shortly thereafter. He took the long 22 hour plane ride to his station in Qui Nhon where he served with the Army military police. He recalls lots of rain, heat, and rats but was working twelve hour shifts so kept very busy. They spent a lot of time with the Vietnamese people, escorting them to and from their work stations around the base. To pass some time, he often played basketball, flag football, or worked out with the other guys. He opted not to take an “R & R,” in Thailand like the military offered. Instead he chose to go back home early, and after spending 11 months and 8 days in Vietnam, he flew home. He recalls flying home on a cargo plane, reflecting that life was precious and could be taken in an instant. Edgar went on to marry Susan Szish in 1975. Together they had 2 children, Nicole (Murray) & Jessica (Rivera.) Edgar worked for many years in the Pennsylvania State Prison system, retiring as Deputy Warden on SCI-Dallas. Edgar and Susan have 7 grandchildren: Julian and Frances in Monroeville, PA; Taj, Donovan, and Philomena in Papillion, NE. Mena passed away in 2023, with Susan passing away just 16 months later. Edgar’s family is immensely proud of his military service and is grateful to all veterans and families who serve.
