Robert E. "Bob" Lohr, NAVY
To Robert “Bob” E. Lohr — a life of service, family, and country.
Bob was born January 1, 1943, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Opal and Clyde Lohr. A graduate of South High School in Omaha in May 1961, he answered the call to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Navy in September of that same year, completing recruit training in San Diego, California.
Immediately following boot camp in 1961, he reported aboard the USS Nereus (AS-17), a submarine tender, beginning his active-duty service at sea. He went on to complete Electrician's Mate technical training and Projector specialized training, after which he reported to the USS Ranger (CV-61), an aircraft carrier, in January 1963. While stationed off the coast of Vietnam, he proudly supported the air campaign during the war, exemplifying the discipline and dedication of the United States Navy during one of its most demanding conflicts.
In August 1963, during his active-duty service, he married Shirley Cernelic, his high school sweetheart, beginning a partnership that would span more than 50 years.
After four years of dedicated service — from boot camp in San Diego to sea duty aboard the USS Nereus and USS Ranger, including deployment off the coast of Vietnam — Bob received his Honorable Discharge from the United States Navy in September 1965, closing a chapter defined by courage, skill, and steadfast commitment to country and family.
Bob and Shirley raised three children, Scott, Todd, and Julie, in Omaha, Nebraska. Bob continues to be a devoted father, husband, sailor, pioneer for youth soccer in Omaha, lifelong soccer fan, and Nebraskan.
